How's it going? It's Justin from transistor.fm. I've got a really fun idea to share with you. But first, we need to roll some theme music. Let's go.
Justin Jackson:So one of the things I was really excited about exploring with this show are all of the possibilities that happen when you add video to podcasts. And how you don't always have to choose a video only podcast or an audio only podcast, but that it's possible to create this hybrid version, which is both audio and video that sits somewhere in the middle. And I thought one of the ways I could demonstrate this is to create for you, the listener or the watcher, creative podcast episodes in different genres that leverage both audio and video. So for today's episode, I want you to use your imagination. I want you to imagine that you are a parent and you've got your kids in the back seat of the car and you're doing a long road trip.
Justin Jackson:Now, when I was doing this with my kids, my wife and I would sit in the front and we would put on a Dora the Explorer CD. And in the back, the kids would listen to the audio, obviously, but they would also have a storybook that they could page through. Now, this approach had a few challenges. One is there was only one storybook, but we had four kids. So today, I'm gonna create for you a kids storybook podcast that is going to work perfectly fine as an audio podcast, but will also have visuals for the kids that they can enjoy while they are sitting in the back.
Justin Jackson:Happy kids, happy parents. I think this is gonna be really fun. So get ready. I'm about to produce this podcast for you. And at the end, I'll tell you how I did it, And I'll also share some final thoughts.
Justin Jackson:So here we go. This is Terry's Great Run, Hope Across Canada. Look out the window. Do you see the road? It winds past blue ocean waves, over golden fields, through forests, beside rivers, and toward mountains dusted with snow.
Justin Jackson:Long ago, one young man stepped into a road like that. His name was Terry Fox. He was not the biggest runner. He was not the fastest runner. But inside him was something stronger than speed.
Justin Jackson:And once Terry began to run, that hope traveled farther than anyone could have imagined. This is the story of Terry's great run across Canada. Not just a run of feet and roads and miles, but a run of courage, kindness, and a dream big enough for a whole country to carry. Chapter one: a boy who loved to run. Before the long highways, before the cheering crowds, before the whole country knew his name, Terry was just a boy who loved to move.
Justin Jackson:He ran across schoolyards. He chased basketballs. He raced his friends to the next tree, the next fence and the next corner. If there was a game happening, Terry wanted in. If there was a team, Terry wanted to help.
Justin Jackson:And if there was a challenge, well, Terry leaned towards challenges like flowers leaned toward the sun. All right. Well, hopefully that was interesting to you and started opening up your imagination about the kinds of video podcasts we can make. I think that podcast there works perfectly fine as an audio only podcast. But, you know, if you gave the kids an iPad with Apple Podcasts on it and they wanted to watch the video version, they could watch the visuals while everybody is listening to the story, which I think is really additive.
Justin Jackson:But more than that, I think there's just so many more creative ideas like this that use a combination of audio and video in new and interesting ways in podcasts. I wanna quickly explain how I made this. And yes, I did use AI since I had time challenges. So in ChatGPT, I had it generate the visuals for me. So these were the original visuals and also the story, which I then just read out loud.
Justin Jackson:And then to animate the images, I use tools like Google Gemini and another product called Cling dot ai. So a few different options there. The narration is mine. And certainly, if I was doing this as a professional, I would probably write the story myself. But I'm not opposed to using AI as a tool to help us generate video podcasts.
Justin Jackson:For example, if you're a great illustrator, you can put your illustrations in these tools and have them animate them for you. So it's still your original artwork, but then you're just using AI to augment it. Anyway, I would love to hear what you think about this episode. If you are on YouTube, you can leave a comment. If you're on Spotify, you can also leave a comment.
Justin Jackson:Or if you're in your podcast player and you wanna leave us a note or an email or a video message or an audio message, all of the details are in the show description. One more ask. This is a brand new show, and I would love for you to tell your friends if you thought this was interesting, intriguing, if it sparked ideas in you as a podcast producer or editor or creator, I would love it if you shared the show with a friend. Just tell them to search for the video podcast show in their favorite podcast app. Thanks.
